NATIONAL URBAN WATER AWARD TO UTTARAKHAND JAL SANSTHAN

The Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, in partnership with the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has instituted the National Urban Water Awards for urban local bodies and water utilities to recognize, inspire and celebrate excellence in urban water management.

Mr. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development gave away the awards on 15th May 2008 in ASCI, Hyderabad and said it was high time that the country introduced user charges for the entire water sector and solid waste disposal systems. He emphasized on charge of water used in an effort to reduce wastage.

A.K. Mehta, Joint Secretary of the Ministry, said 60 nominations were received from various cities of the country for the awards. Of them, 16 were shortlisted for final selection by the jury. Out of that five organizations have been declared as winners. The initiative, Uttaranchal Koop – an innovative device for tapping potable drinking water by Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan is one of them. Shri. H.P. Uniyal, Chief General Manager, U.J.S. gave presentation for the initiative. The other organizations sharing the awards are Kulgaon Badalpur Municipal Council in Maharashtra, Surat Mnicipal Corporation, Alandur Municipality in Tamil Nadu, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. The programme was coordinated by Prof. Srinivas Chary Vedala, Director, Centre for Energy, Environment, Urban and Infrastructure Development.
